This choir, I feel, is a unique set of young boys that have all of the potential and the makings of being a fantastic choir. I feel privileged to start up a new culture within the Archbishop Tennison’s Boys. The boys range from high sopranos, rivalling quite a few girls’ choirs, all the way down to tenors and even a roaring bass. There are so many varieties of colourful sounds in this choir with all of the volume and the power of a gospel choir.
This choir is around 40 strong boys and I have been rehearsing with them for a round 6 months now and the sound and the quality is really developing. They remind me of the beginnings of St Martins in the Field High School for Girls’ choir but just in boys. The irony is that they are the brother school of St Martins’ and will be an excellent ally in the championing of school choirs in London.
Not only do we have the making of a great choir, but we have quite a few lead singers springing up too. Singing seems like it will be taken very seriously in this school. They were widely received by their school in their first assembly back in January and they will be having their 3rd performance in the harvest festival in their school. Recently, they performed at St Martins in the Field High School for Girls’ concert, and also took part in the taster day of the Oasis Academy Choirs where they were truly inspirational to the Oasis school in Shirley. These performances have inspired many boys to take part in their own choirs and showed other boys in other schools that singing is not just a ‘girly’ thing.
